【Abstract】 The latest GIS technique has stepped to a stage with new features and characters: networking, specializing, intellectualizing and public accessibility, etc. Public GIS is a new GIS application in recent years. Its main purpose is to provide information service to public. Some basic concepts, characteristics and system functions of public GIS are briefly introduced in this paper. After analyzing the problems of current public GIS, a new public GIS system supported by wide band network (kilomega Ethernet network) is presented.
