A Preliminary Study of the Composition of Bronze in the Upper Xiajiadian Culture within the Western Liaoning Area
【Abstract】 The Upper Xiajiadian culture was mainly distributed in Western Liaoning, easternInner Mongolia and northern Hebei as a distinctive local culture in ancient China. Numbers of bronzes have been unearthed from its sites. Through tests of 64 bronzes of the late Western Zhou and the mid and late Warring States period unearthed from Western Liaoning for their alley composition with the isotop X-ray fluorescence method it can be preliminarily ascertained that by the late Western Zhou period, local people had been able to smelt copper mineral and formulate and cast bronze with fairly high tin or lead content, and that their bronze metallurgy had reached a certain level, but tin had not yet become one of the main components of the alley, and tinny and leady bronze had not held the leading position. This indicates that the technology was still at a low level, with most bronze objects, especially weapons and implements of production, being not up to standard in alley composition.
