【Abstract】 In this paper the charateristics of the second derivative spectrum is discussed and the second derivative infrared spectra of the thermal modelling series of massy coal in the region of 3000 ̄2800, 1500 ̄1300,and 1800 ̄ 500cm-1 are presented. The changes of the second derivative infrared spectra clearly indicate the thermal evolution process of the organicmatters in massy coal. With increase of the temperature of thermal modelling,the branchedchains of alkyl group tend to break,shorten and loss,at the same time,the oxygen-bearinggroups are gradually lost,more C=O are directly combined with aromatic rings and aromaticrings tend to condenste.
