COMPARATIVE FEEDING PHYSIOLOGY OF WILD AND CULTURED POPULATIONS OF PACIFIC OYSTER CRASSOSTREA GIGAS
【Abstract】 The production of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. a worldwide aquaculture species, is among the highest of shellfishes, but the individual size and mean meat index of the cultured POpulation are usually smaller/lower than that of the wild population. In order to understand if these differences are related to the feeding regimes of the wild and cultured oyster populations, the authors studied the comparative feeding physiology of these two populations in singgou Bay during April and May, 1995. The experiments were carried out semi-in situ using a running seawater system. Results showed that there were no significant differenes in filtration rate, sorting efficiency and absorption efficiency between the wild and cultured POpulations, but that there were significant differences in retention efficiency and ingestion rate. These indicated that comPared to the cultured ones the wild oysters could ingest more fed from seawater. Based on the filtration rate of oyster with different they sizes (7 size classes were tested),the simulated relationship between filtration rate and dry tissue weight were as follows: for the wild Population,FRw=2. 8823W0. 3547, R2= 0. 9422, and for the cultured population, FRc= 4. 014 4W0. 2691, R2= 0. 9029
