【Abstract】 new kind of YS--supported cobalt catalyst (YSCo) for the vapor phase carbonylation of methanol to produce acetic acid has been prepared. The carbonylation of methanol over YSCo was carried out in acontinuous flow reactor with methyl iodide as cocatalyst. Because of aspecial carbide formed through hot cracking of polyvinylidene chloride as the support, this catalyst has a large specific surface area (1000 m2/g) and evenly distributed porosity (its pore diameter distribution is concentrated in a range of 0. 8  ̄ 1. 2 nm), as well as an excellent thermostability and mechanical strength. The effect of the reaction temperature and the amount of cocatalyst CH3I on the conversion of methanol isinvestigated. The reaction rate of methanol carbonylation catalyzed byYSCo reached 285 g AcOH/g Co-h under relatively mild reaction conditions, which is much higher than that of the Ni/activated carbon catalyst (182 AcOH/g Ni-h) reported in literature.
