【Abstract】 Transformational-generative grammar has been developed for the systematic description and explanation of the structure of human language. It allows for an infinite variety of possible sentences in English through the application of a finite set of transformational rules, and it reveals the differences appearing in deep structures between sentences which are, in their surface structures, apparently similar.
