【Abstract】 Some specimens of lanternfish were collected from the waters around the Nansha Islands of South China Sea by the R/V "Shi Yan 3" in A-pril-May 1986. Of which, two specimens were considered as belonging to a new species of the genus Bolinichthys. The holotype and paratype are deposited in South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Academia Sinica, Bolinichthys nanshanensis sp. nov. (Fig. 1 )Diagnosis B. nanshanensis distingushed from all other species of the genus Bolinichthys by being less in number of VO, 4 vs. 5. This species resembles B. pyrsobolus (Alcock) and B. nikolayi Bekker in both the marked elevation of VO2 relative to the others of VO and the lower position of VLO, far below lateral line. Besides having less VO,it differs from B. pyrsobolus in the number of infracaudal luminous scales ( 5 vs. 2-3 ) and from B. nikolayi in the gill rakers(20-21 vs. 14).Description D.13; A.13; P.12; V. 8 -9 ; C.20. GR 6 + 1 +13-14 =20-21.Body rather elongate, compressed. Body depth 4.06-4.11 in SL. Snout very short and slightly pointed, 11.50-12.00 in -HL. Eye large, bulging into dorsal profile of head, diameter 2.56-2.82 in HL. Interorbital space narrow, distinctly smaller than eye. Nasal rosette essentially round, in front of eye. Mouth terminal, slightly oblique; Both jaws extend posteriorly far beyond eye;The maxillary end reaches nearly under-hind preopercle edge.Teeth on jaws minute, in rows. Glil-opening wide; Gill membranes not united, free from isthmus; Gill rakers compressed, lanceolate, with spinules on ventral and lateral sides; Gill filaments shorter than 1/3 gill rakers? 7 branchiostegals.Body covered with thin cycloid scales, losed easily. The dorsal origin slightly posterior to a vertical through the pelvic origin, much nearer snout tip than caudal base. An adipose fin middle between the dorsal end and the caudal base. Anal begins behind dorsal end below, its base slightly longer than dorsal base. Pectoral slender, the fin tip extending beyond pelvic base and reaching above the middle between pelvic insertion and anus. Pelvic short. Caudal forked.Brown, gill darker. Iris black with a whitish luminous area. Fins pale. Luminous scales white.Photophores:No Dn.Vn small,at anterior margin of eye and close behind nasal rosette. 2 Op, greatly separated;Op1 behind the hind maxillary end. Op2 on line with lower pupil edge and lower pectoral base edge.l PLO, on lateral line, near to upper-posterior corner of gill opening. 2 wide set PVO? PVO, lower, slightly advanced PVO2 and little behind PLO; PVO2 at middle of pectoral base, slightly nearer PVO1 than PLO. 5 PO; The first interspace much longer than others; PO3 slightly raised; PO4 well elevated, above level of PVO1. 4 VO; VO2 markedly elevated relative to others of VO, slightly nearer VO3 than VO1.1 VLO, 4-5 times its own diameter below lateral line. 3 SAO, the series angulate; SAO, distinctly above and behind VO4, little higher than level of VO2; SAO2 over the base of 2nd or 3th anal ray, slightly below level of VLO. SO3 on lateral line over the base of fourth or fifth anal ray. 4-5 AOa, in a row with equally interspaces; AOa1 on the base of 5 - 6th anal ray. 3-4 AOp, in line all behind anal base. 2PoL; PoL1 little higher than last AOa and posterior ;PoL2 on lateral line slightly posterior to PoL1. 3 Prc;Prc12 close at lower current caudal rays; Prc3 little above and close behind the end of lateral line, far from PrC1-2.Supracaudal luminous scales 2-3 , oblong, anterior to upper current caudal rays. 5 infracaudal luminous scales, in front of lower current caudal rays, extending forwards to AOp2 below. 3 anal base luminous scales on each side, elongate and lanceolate, along the bases of 4 -10th anal lays. Not any luminous scales on dorsal, pecteral and ventral bases. A crescent-shaped luminous tissue on the posterior half of the iris.Named For the Nansha Islands, the place collecting type specimens.Holotype No.86(27)-010, 73.2mm SL, Station 27(06°20/N,114°05/ E), Nansha Islands of South China Sea, depth 975-0m. April 24, 1986.Paratype l; No.86(27)-011, 74.1mm SL, Station 2
