【Abstract】 Using rabbit serum antibody against human keratin we have characterized some keratin-like components in Tetrahymena. Indirect immunofluorescence shows that these components distribute mainly in oral apparatus,basal bodies, and kinetodesmal fibers. In the whole mounted specimens of TEM, these structures still remain after treatment with low and high salt buffers containing Triton X-100. Immunoblot identifies a pair of polypeptides with molecular weight of 60 kD and 54 kD, respectively. Their features, including antigenicity, solubility and molecular weight are very similar to that of keratin. We speculate that intermediate filament proteins may occur in certain unicellular eukaryotes, and the proteins of which must have diversified in some way.更多还原
