【Abstract】 A red pigment was isolated and purified from Serratia marcescens Bizio by treatment with organic solvent. The results indicated that it is a compound containing hydroxyl groups and counjugated polyene by elementary analysis. ultraviolet spectra, infra-red spectra and others. Its chemical formula is C₂₀H₃₂O₂, The pigment dissolves easly in alcohol, ether and other organic solvents, and slightly soluble in water. It is stable against heat,but sensitive to light.
