【Abstract】 On July 22 1989,a heavy rain took place at the boundary of Xinxian and Linxian Counties in Shanxi Province Precipitation at the centre of storm amounted to 260mm and the area with precipitation above 100mm was more than 1825km~2 From the inves-tigation after storm 91 desilting dams among the total of 205 were destroyed,2505mu of land formed behind the dam were damaged covering 16.5% of the total land for-med bchind the dams in the county Through investigation on 33 desilting dams in the locality,27 dams were damaged in differevt degree among which,15 dams were destr-oyed due to overtopping The main reason leading to the destrucition are as follows:af-ter many year’s siltation the dams were not heigh tened as it should be part of engin-eering planning and designs was unreasonable drainage system was incomplete The pro-blems of these dams in the Xingxian County generally existed in the whole loess plateau The authors suggest that a general survey should be carried out on current status of the desilting dams and remedial measures be taken in view of the investigation results.更多还原
