【Abstract】 Data compression may be viewed as a new branch of information theory, and also a recent extension of coding techniques. It has important application in the areas of large file storage and distributed systems. In this paper, some main concepts and new methods of data compression are discussed, which were developed in the middle of the 1980’ s.
