HYPOGLOSSAL AND RECURRENT LARYNGEAL RESPONSES TO PULMONARY STRETCH RECEPTOR AND SUPERIOR LARYNGEAL INPUTS
【Abstract】 Recently, the pathogenesis of upper airwar occlusion duringsleep was noticed by many investigators. The target of this work is tocompare the difference of the whole phrenic nerve(PHR),hypoglossalnerve(HYP)and recurrent laryngeal nerve(RL)discharges,to observethe responses of those three nerves to pulmonary stretch receptor(PSR)and superior laryngeal nerve(SL)inputs. The experiments were done ondecerebrate, paralyzed cats ventilated with a cycle triggered pump.Thedischarge pattern of the PHR,HYP and RL in different conditions weredifferent in several ways:a)HYP and RL had earlier onsets,40~48 msbefore PHR;b)PHR had a augmenting pattern within the whold inspira-tion phase;HYP had a decrementing pattern within the whole inspirationphase;RL had a plateau - like pattern breaking down at the end of ins-piration within the both inspiration and expiration phases;c)Wheninflations were withheld, resulting in elimination of phasic PSR input, there was an increase in HYP and RL activity, and both dischargepatterns became augmenting, but no significant change of pattern in PHRactivity;d)SL stimulation at inspiration elicited an excitatory responsefollowed by a suppression of activity in the ipsilateral HYP and RL,andin the contralateral PHR,but they had different latencies of excitation. Our results indicate:a)HYP and RL had earlier onsets than PHR;b)HYP and RL discharges are inhibited by PSR inputs, with the HYPmore strongly inhibited;c)SL afferents exert similar effects on the PHR,HYP,and RL.These different effects suggest that a)there are differentneural populations driving the PHR,HYP,and RL in brain stem;b)Both PSR and SL afferents affect upper airway patency by changing HYPand RL discharges.
