【Abstract】 This study is to assess the effectiveness of intraoperative ultrasonography (IUS)in space-occupying lesions of CNS. IUS were performed on 44 cases with real-time scanner. The adventages is summarized as followings. (1) localization; all cases well defined, the smallest brain mass was 0.7X0.8X1.6 cm in size, the smallest diameter of syringomyelia scaned was only 0.2cm. IUS displayed margin, extent and anatomic relationship more clearly than CT, so IUS helped the neurosurgeons to choose right entry with minimum trauma; (2) Characterization, cystic or mixed component were recognized in 14 cases. 2 cases of syringomyelia had been misdiagnosed intramye-lia tumor by CT.Some ultrasonic findings would be suggestive to differential diagnosis; (3) Ultrasonically guided biopsy and drainage, which have potential benefit to improve the surgical procedure.
