【Abstract】 Lead was the first metal smelted in the ancient world. The earliest known specimens, dated from about 6000 BC, was excavated at Catal Huyuk, Turkey. Present archaeological evidence shows that lead appeared in China between 1500 and 2000 BC. In the Song Dynasty, there was a period during which the annual output of metals was comparatively bigger, In 1078, lead production was 4600t.Since traditional techniques are passed down through centuries in some mountain areas, the author has visited ancient lead smelting localities in Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces, and studied the whole process of production. In ancient tines lead was widely used in making bronzo and white lead powder.
