In this paper the stress distribution in the die for cold extrusion was investigated by means the frozen stress method using photoplastic analysis. Based on the experimental results, the main reason for the die failure was discovered and the location which is the most prone to fracture was made definite. The effect of the interference on the die life was also discussed in the paper. Finally, some rationalization proposals were put forward for improving the die life.
