【Abstract】 Based on a vast amount of observed and investigated data, this paper gives the situation of calamity induced by storm surges along the coast of Guangdong, and Hainan The emergence of storm surges along the coast of Guangdong and Hainan,their slow transformation of atmospheric pressure and wind force effects from the ocean to shallow sea to the coastal area is discussed. It presents an outline on the distribution of storm surge levels and sea elevation during typhoons, as well as their close relation to the topography. It is pointed out that the four coastal sections with serious storm surges in Guangdong, are in Shantou Yaoping, east Guangdong and Hainan, the Pearl River Mouth,Leizhou Bay and the coastal area of Hainan at Qiongzhou Strait.
