【Abstract】 The ultrastructure of cultured myocardial cells of neonatal rats was investigated using the electro-microscope. After the cells were incubated for three to four days, it was found that the crests of mitochondria were Ioosely and irregularly arranged, the granular endoplasmic reticula developed, and the autophagic vascuoles were apparent, but myofibrils could not be appreciably observed, although discrete myofilaments were visible. Having been incubated for six to seven days, the mitochondria became larger and more abundant, with their crests arranged in a dense and parallel fashion, or occasionally branched out and connected one another, Such myobrils contained sarcomeres with thickened Z lines, at the level of which the intercalated disk were located, as well as sparsely distributed transverse tubules.
