【Abstract】 According to geological section of the diversion canal (from the Huanghe River mouth to Qingdao City), the characteristics of Quaternary shallow sedi-mentary facies and environments in the Huanghe flood plain and the Jiao-Lai plain are expounded in the paper, and some problems of palaeogeographical divisions and applied geology are also discussed. The section reveals different facies which are from west to east: soil of the Huanghe River flood plain, sediment of the Juding Lake, alluvium of the Mihe and Danhe Rivers, lagoonal deposit of the Dawan mouth, and the Tan-Lu rift zone, in which there are sediments of the Weihe River and the adjacent hilly area, lucustrine deposit and alluvium and diluvium of the Daguhe River. Lithology and stratigraphic structure are as follows:1. Facies of the Huanghe River flood plain: from Beizhen to Boxing, sediments are nearly bedded with clayey silt and silty clay at 0-3m, silt at 3-6m and uncontinuous silty clay at 6-8m.2. Sedimtary facies of the Juding Lake: strata are composed of, from up to down, (1) clayey silt and silty clay, with a thickness of l-3m, (2) silt, with the largest thickness of 7m at center and thinner sidewards, and (3) mixed silty clay and clayey silt, 2-5m thick. Bedrock is not reached. The lagoonal sediments of the Juding Lake are horizontally bedded and stabl? with a conti-nuous distribution as wide as 40km2.3. Alluvial facies of the Mihe and Danhe River: the alluvial section is 28km long and mainly silty clay with minor silt and clayey silt. The sediments are poorly bedded and fing upwards.4. Lagoonal facies of the Dawan mouth: the lagoonal section is 27.5km long, from up to down made up of silty clay and clayey silt (0.5-2m thick), silt (2-5m thick), silty clay and clayey silt (l-4m thick and thinning eastwards), and silt (l-4m thick) with uncontinuous distribution. No bedrock.5. Alluvial and diluvial facies of the Weihe River: the section is 8km south of Changy County, NW-SE in strike, and 47km long. It has traversed the Tan-Lu rift zone and the hilly area along the Weihe River. "The sediments are poorly bedded with unstable thickness. Forms and occurrences of its geologie bodies are greatly changed.6. Lacustrine facies of the Gao Ping Lake: the section is 45km long, with sediments from up to down as silty ctay (2-5m thick), clayey silt (2-3m thick), and silty clay (2-4m thick). Some drills have cut through the bottom of the sediments and revealed medm-coarse sand and’ red Cretaceous mudrock.7. Alluvial and Diluvial facies of the Dage River: there are two parts of the section, the upper is clayey silt and silty clay (l-8m thick) deposited in flood plain and swamp, and the lower (2-5m thick) is gravel-bearing, medium-grained sand, somewhere with minor broken rock pieces and thin clay layers. Some problems of palaeogeographical divisions and applied geology are discussed. According to the factors of stratigraphic structure, geomorphology, sediment sources and geologie history, the whole region is divided into erosional area, erosionalaccumulation area and accumulation area. The accumu-lation area is made up of three subareas of mountainfront alluvial depition, the Huanghe River flood land and coastal zone. On problems of applied geology, silting up of mud and’ sitt in the Huanghe River mouth and how to utilize this mud and silt, and prevention from leakage during diversion works are disscu-ssed.
