【Abstract】 This paper is the first of a series dealing with morphological characteristics, biological cycle and damage importance of insect species newly identified as cone and seed pests in Northeastern China. The lustrous spruce cone moth (Barbara fulgens) appears to be a serious pest of korean spruce cones in Heilongjiang province.INTRODUCTIONAdults (both males and females) of the lustrous spruce cone moth (B. fulgens) emerged in March, 1988 form pupae collected in late July 1987 during our survey in Heil0ngjiang province, and then stored in natural conditions of France, therefore, we are golngto provide here: 1) description of adults, especially male genitalia, and comparison with other Barbara species; 2) some data on biological cycle in Northeastern China; 3) location of the collections, including host species and damage importance. The lustrous spruce cone moth (B. fulgens) was first recorded from the single specimen of female in the Khabarovsk area, Far East Soviet Union, yet close to Heilongjiang boundaries. Kuznetsov (1967) considered this species may be regarded as a vicarious subspecies of B. herri-chiana Obraztsov or B. colfaxiana Kearfooto However, clear differences noticed in the structure of female genitalia and wing markings compared to those exhibited by these two last species finally lead Kuznetsov to propose a species status for B. fulgens. To our knowledge. no description of male genitalia has been provided.DESCRIPTION OF MORPHOLQGICAL CHARACTERISTICSADULTS The wingspread is 14—17mm. The forewings present a ground color varying from brownish-gray to bronze, with silvery white sports and stripes. It mainly differs form the other Barbara species in the occurence of very characteristical x-shaped white figure, formed by to transverse lines crossing in the middle part of the forewings. The hindwings are not unicolorous. Their base is lighened, contrasting with the dark band bordering the margins, which is apically broadening.MAIE GENITALIA The species strongly differs from other Barbara species in the valva, especially the sacculus and cucullus. In B. fulgens, the sacculus appears rounded and convex, whereas it forms a 90—100° angle in the other Barbara species. The separation between sacculus and cucullus is clearly more constricted. In addition, the internal lobe of the cucullus is more elongated.FEMALE GENITALIA The ostium is located very close to the anterior margin of the postvaginal plate, as previously noticed by Kuznetsov (1969) in individuals from Khabarovsk area. In the other Barbara species, the ostium opens in a more central position. The postvaginal plate is more triangular in B. fulgens.PUPA Dark brown and about 7—9 mm in length. The back of the 8th and last segment bears 6 teeth and 2 hooklike bristles located just before the distal teeth. 6 bristles of Similar shape occur on the very top of the abdomen.
