【Abstract】 Metal and non-metal impurities, in particular oxygen, in chalcogenide glasses are of harmful effects on their optical properties. Even if oxide content in glasses is as low as 10-2%, it would cut off optical transmission at 11μm. By eliminating oxides in glasses their optical transmission region will extend evidently, that is from 0.7-11μm to 0.7-18μm. In this paper the methods of measuring trace amount oxygen and the possible sources of oxygen are discussed and the methods of eliminating oxygen are proposed. Results of the examination show that by using these methods the oxygen content in glasses can be reduced down to 10-20 ppm, so that the light loss of optical fibres used for 10.6μm CO2 laser is less than 5dB/M.
