晶状体某些液晶性质的探讨
PRELIMINARY EXPLORATIONS OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF LIQUID CRYSTAL OF MAMMALIAN CRYSTALLINE LENS
【摘要】 我们用自已设计的实验读数装置测定了20只新鲜牛眼晶状体的双折射系数,所得数据和FA.Bettelheim教授等人最初估计的值相符合。
【Abstract】 <ABSTRACT>The authors measured birefringence of 20 fresh bovine crysalline lenseswith a device newly designed and the results were similar as reported. Cry-stalline lens is important in accommodation of vision. Generally, the lensis colorless and transparent,but as opacity is present then cataract develops,the latter having been studied with different biochemical methods, but notfrom view point of liquid crystal.The birefringence of matter will provide us with information of its ani -sotropic or macromolecular alignment. We have measured changes in biref-ringence during different stages of dehydration in a course of days. Photo-multiplier and photoelectric galvanometer were employed to ensure accuracyof measurements.The results showed that being different from crystalline lens showingbirefringence, although the macromolecules of protein were probably isotro-pic or anisotropic, yet they were alligned in regular order. Besides, freshcrystalline lens containing 56% of water also exhibited birefringence withproperties different from that of solids. So, it is assumed that bovine crys-talline lens exists probably in a liquid crystal state.
