【Abstract】 Since 1984 we have studied the possibility of monitoring and predicting earthquakes with the mercury survey. According to the geochemical characteristics of mercury and simulated experiments, the physical promise of predicting earthquakes by monitoring mercury content is quite clear. The experimental measurement has shown satisfactory results too. There are distinct Hg anomalies over some geothermal spings and active faults. During the Miaofengshan-Julu earthquake in China, there reflected distinct anomalies of Hg in water in a geothermal well near the earthquake region. Therefore, the monitoring ,and prediction of earthquakes by mercury survery are full of promise.
