【Abstract】 Four hundred and four cases of squamous carcinoma of tongue were treated withradiation at the Cancer Hospital of Shanghai Medical University from Jan. 1968 to Dec.1975, and 93% of cases were followed up for more than 5 years. Of the 404 cases, 368 hadlesions in the mobile portion of the tongue and 36 in the base of the tongue. The overall 5-year survival rate was 49.8%. 270 cases with lesions in the mobile portion of the tonguewere treated with external irradiation and interstitial radium implantation, 92 cases under-went simple external irradiation. The 5-year survival rate was 63.3% and 16.3% respec-tively. Invasion of the base of the mouth and metastasis to the lymph nodes were importantprognostic factors. Control of the primary carcinoma of the mobile portion of the tonguemay not only depend on dosage of interstitial radium, but also on total dosage of radio-therapy including external irradiation. Neck dissection is important in the treatment ofcarcinoma of tongue, 5-year survival rate of prophylactic and therapeutic neck dissectionis 85.7% and 62.0% respectively. For the cases without neck dissection,the 5-year survivalrate was only 36. 1%. Sixteen cases underwent salvage surgery due to failure in controllingthe primary or metastatic tumors by radiation, the 5-year survival rate was 43. 9%.更多还原
