【Abstract】 In this paper a systematic method of studying the branch problem of a four- bar linkage is proposed and a very simple criterion is obtained. The conclusion is as follows: 1. If the shortest link + the longest one < the sum of the remaining two, and the directed angles opposite the shortest link are both in the same sense, then it is possible to drive the mechanism through all given positions; otherwise it is impossible. 2.
