【Abstract】 The fossil charophytes described in this paper were reported for the first time from Sichuan Province. They contain 21 species(including 8 new species) assigned to 12 genera, with their occurrences shown in Table 1.According. to their stratigraphical distribution, five charophyte assemblages are proposed in ascending order as follows:Assemblage Ⅰ represented by Nodosoclavator puchangheensis, N. gudianensis and Clypeator zongjiangensis, which are found in the Bailong, Qiqusi and Gudian Formations. Charophytes of this assemblage simple in genera and species, among which N. puchangheensis was known from the Lower Cretaceous Gaofengshi and Puchanghe Formations of Yunnan, China, while Clypeator zongjiangensis from the Valanginian of Spain, these suggesting that the assemblage can be considered as Lower Cretaceous, possibly Valanginian in age.Assemblage Ⅱ comprising such charophytes as Flabellochara hangzhouensis, Mesochara yibinensis and Grambastichara gulinensis found in the Lower Member of the Jiangding Group, among which Flabellochara hangzhouensis was reported from the Lower Cretaceous of Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, suggesting that the assemblage can be assigned to the Early Cretaceous, possibly to AptianAlbian in age.Assernblage Ⅲ recognized from the Upper Cretaceous Xiaoba Formation, which contains 6 species in 4 genera, namely Charites xiaobaensis, Sphaerochara magna, Grambastichara communis, Obtusochara songheensis, O. huidongensis and O. huiliensis, among which Grambastichara communis was described by Z. Wang (1978) from the Upper Cretaceous Paomagang Formation of Hubei. Its similarity to the charophyte flora from the Upper Cretaceous Nanxiong Formation of Guangdong also suggesting that it can be referred to Late Cretaceous in age.Assemblage Ⅳ with the charophytes represented by Croftiella leidashuensis, Peckichara zhijiangensis, P. sp., Raskyaechara xinhuaensis and R. sichuanensis found in the Lower Member of the Leidashu Formation, among which Peckichara zhijiangensis is known from the Fang jibe, Yangxi Formations and the Upper Member of the Xingaozui Formation of Hubei, while Raskyaechara xinghuaensis from the second formation of the Funing. Group to the Sanduo Formation of Jiangsu, indicating an age ranging from Palaeocene to Early Eocene.Assemblage Ⅴ recognized from the Middle Eocene Lushan Formation, and the Upper Member of the Leidashu Formation, represented orly by Charites sadleri, Grambastichara of. rudongica, Obtusochara jianglingensis and Gyrogona qianjiangica, among which the latter two species were found in the Middle Eocene Jinsha Formation of the Yangtze-Han River. Basin and from the Fourth Member of the Shahejia Formation of the Bahai Coastal Region, thus suggesting that it might be assigned to Middle Eocene in age.
