【Abstract】 An orange crystal （Ⅰ） has been isolated from the roots of Ventilago leiocarpa Benth. On the basis of spectral ( UV, IR, ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR and MS) analysis and its characteristic chemical properties, the structure of （Ⅰ） was proved to be 1, 3, 8—trihydroxy—6—methyl—anthraquinone, i.e.emodin.
