【Abstract】 In this study, the flux of sodium in red cells and serum was investigated in 6 conscious dogs subjected to septic shock. With severe sepsis, sodium entered cells and led to hyponatremia. It was found that the mean aortic pressure (MAP) was positively correlated with serum Na~+ (P<0.01) and negatively correlated with RBC Na~+ (P<0.01) and RBC Na~+/serum Na~+ ratio (P<0.01). However, only when MAP dropped more than 30% was RBC Na~+ increased to significant levels, and the increase in RBC Na~+/serum Na~+ ratio was significant after 19% drop in MAP. Since significant elevation of red cell sodium occurred only during terminal sepsis, it is felt the red cell is not an ideal model for the damaged cells.
