【Abstract】 From 1980--1982, the Zhu Jiang Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science completed a survey of fishes in the estuary of the Zhu Jiang Ri- ver (Pearl River). 50 specimens of a new species of the genus Takifugu were collect- ed here, during that term and late. The description of the new species is given be- low. Takifugu orbimaculatus, Kuang Li et Liang sp. nov. (figs. 1--3) Diagnosis: Longitudinal ridges of the frontal bones of the skull fused with the posterior margin of the prefrontals. Prefrontal bones moderately developed and ex- panded laterally. Frontal bones narrower than the prefrontal bones. The free later- al margins of the frontal and sphenotic bones forming an obtuse or at right angle with each other. The skull is of the Takifugu oblongus type(fig. 3). Dermal pri- ckles well developed. The prickled areas are discontinuous, occuring dorsally and ventrally, but not in the lateral region anterior to the pectorat fiu (fig. 2). Description: Based on 50 specimens (including the holotype, allotype and para- types) 30--200mm, standard length, D. 13--14; A. 11--12; p. 16--17; vertebrae 21--22. Body lesselongate, tapering behind. Depth 3. 0--3. 6, 3, 4 head 3. 0--3. 6 in standard length. Snout 3. 2--3. 6, eye 4. 3-6. 7 in head. The dorsal region is greenish yellow in life and brownish gray following preservation in formalin. A dark round ocellus of mo- derate size with a wide white rim occurs laterally behind the pectoral fin. Also, a large dark triangular spot with a white rim occurs at the baseof the dorsal fin. Four dark bands cross the dorsal region, perpendicular to the lonitudinal axis of the body: the first is especially slender and is situated on the anterior region of the norse; the second and third are wide bands running between the eyes and dark ocelli respectively, and the fourth is found in the middle of the caudal peduncle (fig. 1). Remarks: Takifugu orbimaculatus sp. nov. is somewhat similar to juveniles of T. obscurus (Abe), but may be differentiated from the latter by the discontinuous dispo- sition of the prickled region of the pectoral fin, and by the absence of the lateral yellow stripe along the body. It also differs from T ocellatus (Linneaus) by having white rather than orange rims around the pectoral ocellus and large dorsal spot. The type of skull also differs from T. obscurus and T ocellatus. Named orbimaculatus in reference to the moderately large dark ocellus formed la- terlly behind the pectoral fin. Holotype: PR--810617, (?), 188 mm in standard length, collected on June 17, 1981, from the creek of Lianhuashan, Humen; allotype: PR--8406l8, (?), 143 mm in st- andard length, collected on June 18, 1884, from Genzhouhu, Xinhui; paratypes 108--166 mm in standard length: PR--840521 collected on May 21, 1984, from Genzhouhu, Xin- hui; PR--820620, on June 20, 1982, from Modaomen, Zhongshan; PR--810520, on May 20, 1981, from Lianhuashan, Humen, PR--840628, on June 28, 1984, from Genzhouhu, Xin- hui. The holotype and first two paratypes are deposited in Zhu Jiang Fisheries Rese- arch Institute (Guangzhou); the allotype and the latter two paratypes in the Institu- te of Oceanology, Academia Sinica (Qingdao).
