GASEOUS HYDROCARBONS ADSORBED ON SOIL AS AN INDICATOR OF OIL-GAS FIELDS
【Abstract】 It is known that saturated gaseous hydrocarbons can find their way upwards to the earth’s surface through infiltration and diffusion, creating adsorbed-on-soil hydrocarbon anomalies. Research data from the Dongying Depression show that the concentration of gaseous hydrocarbons adsorbed on surface soil is closely related to the pedogenetic environment, and the grain size of soil as well as the contents of organic carbon, calcium carbonate, and iron or aluminium oxides in the soil.Soil samples collected at the same depth are usually representative of different sediments formed under different geological backgrounds, so there exist significant differences in geochemistry for various soils. For this reason, the amount of adsorbed gaseous hydrocarbons is quite different from one soil to another. If this is not taken into consideration, the hydrocarbon anomalous zone outlined is of no indicative significance for oil and gas fields. Only soil samples are collected from the same selected layer, so that the nature of samples and the geological background may be consistent with each other, is a hydrocarbon anomalous zone so defined of indicative significance for oil and gas fields. Petroleum exploration practice has proved successful in the new target areas.
