The Rough Road of China’s Philosophical Enlightenment

【摘要】 <正> through a historical review and theoretical analysis determines that China has had its own philosophical enlightenment. However, it did not originate in Song Neo-Confucianism, but began with the anti-Neo-Confucian thought which abruptly appeared during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Xiao believes that China, Russia and Germany, in entering the modern age, had many points in common. All experienced conditions where development was difficult because the "new broke through the old" but the "dead still controlled the living". One of the reasons for the rough road of the Chinese philosophical enlightenment was the shackle of Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism. Thus, the essay stresses, only the Marxist philosophical movement which sprang up after the May Fourth Movement could usher in the new epoch of modern philosophical revolution. Today, when socialist spiritual civilization is being built, attention should be paid to the task of making up lessons left behind by history, the countercurrents of certain historical movements should be consciously avoided, and the glorious cause of philosophical revolution already started by these pioneers should be advanced.
