Histological Study of Giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca Ⅰ. The microstructure of Digestive Tract
【Abstract】 Specimens of the digestive tract of Giant panda, including the mucosa of oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, deudenum, jejunum, ilium, colon and rectum were taken from the carcases of 9 different aged animals and studied in paraffin section. These carcases were preserved in 10% formalin after death. The result observed in light microscopy shows that, in general, the microstuctures of different parts of panda digestive tract are similar to those of other carnivores. In addition to the similarity, some interesting specitic histotogical features are present, probably due to the adaptation to bamboo as its main food, such as, numerous unicellular and multicellular mucous glands, longer villi and thicker musculuris mucosae and tunica muscularis of the small intestine.
