【Abstract】 This study was carried out at the Bamboo station located at Lushi, Chishui Diistrict, Kweichow Province. In this paper solar energy utilization and yield in different bamboo stands with different density are discussed. Combustion value of culms of phyllostachys pubescens is determined as 4532 calories per gram. On the basis of 73 culms sampled, the regression equation of culm weight referring to D. B. H. can be obtained as Wculm=0.1008D2.3667. Accordingly, the solar energy stored in the esample plots of bamboo stands can be calculated in terms of kilocalories per mu-year. The total solar radiation in Chishui is determined as 60111×104 kilcoalories per mu-year. Therefore, the utilization rate of solar radiation in bamboo stands with different density can be obtained by dividing the total solar radiation by the energy stored in the bamboo stands permu-year. Data collected from five fixed sample plots in recent two years show that the average utilization rate of solar energy in bamboo stannds of chishui is 0.728% and the maximum can reach 1.75%. Leaf area index increases with the increase in density of bamboo stands and accordingly influences the utilization rate of solar energy. But there exists a limitation as the leaf area index reaches a certain high value, the utilization rate of solar energy no longer increases or even decreases. To a certain extent, the yield of new culms and their size increases with density. This indicates that bamboo stands with low density, thin crowns and few leaves can not fully utilize the solar energy and thereafter result in poor accumulation of organic substance and low yield. It is advisable to promote the productivity of bamboo stands by controlling cutting strictly and keeping the living bamboos at least over 190 per mu.
