【Abstract】 Observations were made of the effect of intensive training at altitude on physiological functions of 28 runuers. When they first reached the altitude their heart rate at rest increased by 17. 7%. hemoglobin by 4. 7%,pulmonary ventilation (ATPS) by 18. 6%, and oxygen intake by 5. 5%; 43% of the runners showed highleft-ventricular voltage in ECG. Most indexes returned to flatland levels in 1--2 weeks; The Vo2 max. of thebest-trained runners remained unchanged, wbile that of less-trained ruuners decreased by 10% at 1.895 me-tres. At altittide, significant increase of maximal pulmonary ventilation (ATPS) was an importannt factor inmaintaining the same Vo2 max. as on flatland. After 3 months’ training at altitude, Vo2 max. increasedby 5% on the average, maximal pulmonary ventilation by 13-20%, and vital capacity by 7%. As a result ofimproper load in the initial stage of altitude training, the abonormal ECG was registeted in many runuers.Hematuria after training sessions and competitions was found in 46. 4% of the 28 subjects including 32. 1%macroscope hematuria.
