【Abstract】 Electric discharges of nucl.parafascicularis and nucl,caudatus were recorded simultaneously with both glass microelectrodes in 44 rats so as to observe the effect of noxious stimulation of the sciatic nerve and acupuncture of point “Zusanli” on these discharges.Simul taneous discharges of 81 pairs of above two kinds of neurons were recorded in experiments,including discharges of 26 pairs pain-excit- ing neurons(PEN),3pairs of pain-inhibiting neurons(PIN),28 pairs of the both PEN and PIN,and discharges of 24 pairs of other patterns.The results were as follows: 1.The electric activities of PEN and PIN were demonstrated in nucl.caudatus of rats and the firing patterns of these two types of neurons were characteristic without transformation from one to the other. 2.A noxious stimulus might bring about simultaneous excitation of both PEN in nucl.parafascicularis and nucl.caudatus,or the inhibition of PIN in both,or excitation of PEN in one and inhibition of PIN in the other. 3.Acupuncture of “Zusanli” enhanced the electric activities of PIN and reduced those of PEN in both nuclei simultaneously. It is considered that a noxious stimulus might affect electric discharges of PEN or PIN in nucl.parafascicularis and nucl.caudatus simultaneously,and that acupuncture of “Zusanli” could modulate the activities of the two kinds of neurons.
