【Abstract】 Vital energy is an essential material for life,and is known to have its source from glycolysis and oxidation phosphorylation,of which the latter is more important,production of energy is in close relation with the consumption of oxygen by mitochondria. The authors applied the water extracts of 4 Chinese medicinal herbs(Panax ginseng,Angelica sinensis, Astragalus mongholicus and Schizandra chinensis)and an injection of Sben Mai Ye,which possesses a Qi-reinforcing quality,and studied their effects on rat liver mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in vitro. The results showed that these herb water extracts inhibited the oxygen consumption(S3)and decreased ADP/ O ratio in different degrees.The extract of panax ginseng reduced the oxygen uptake most obviously.Injection of Shen Mai Ye inhibited S3 oxidation,stimulated S4 oxidation,decreased ADP/O and respiratory control index (RCI,S3/S4).The prescription Shen Mai Ye and Panax ginseng could act as an modulating uncoupler.The uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation can be biologically useful,since it is a means of generating heat to maintain body temperature,which enables the body to adapt itself to cold or pathologic condition.
