【Abstract】 Forced waves caused by a low atmopheric pressure traveling normal to-the coastline are discussed using theoretical model of a barotropic sea in this paper. Analysis shows that the forced waves consist of isolated waves which are the direct effect of the low pressure as well as the resurgent inertial oscillations and inertio-gravitational waves. The effect of frictional force on amplitude is found to be larger than Coriolis force, and the effect of frictional force increased with decreasing value of α (α<<1).Resurgent inertio-gravitational waves become inertial oscillation inthe Y = 0, and their moving to the left (facing the coast from the sea) has a larger phase velocity than that moving to the right. The action of Coriolis and frictional forces induced unsymmetrical disturbance for the-forced waves on the right and the left along the coast, with the result that the right has a larger amplitude than the left. Due to influence of frictional force the forced waves is dissipated. Frictional force of bottom is consequently an important factor. Flow field is always a cyclonic gyre round the center of the low pressure.
