【Abstract】 It is impossible to have any garden making in a society whose productivity is solow that lood had to be procured with difficulty. Garden making could become possible only when the development of productivity and social economic conditions reached to a certain stage, that is to say, with slavery, came the inauguration of pleasure garden. In Chinese history, gardens were inaugurated since Ying Dynasty, which reached its fullest development in slavery economy and "Yu" (囿) was the earliest form. Since hunting was no longer the essential labour of social production, it was thought of as a luxury and pastime for the nobility who freed from directly productive labour and despised work as slavish. Such an activity which was thought by the ruling class and nobility to be necessary to their life, defines hunting and wandering the content of the garden and "Yu" its form.By enclosing a large area of land and enabling its vegetation propagated prolifically, so that well stocked with wild birds and animals, or furthermore excavating ponds and throwing up earth to form terraces. All these means composed the garden of the ruling class and nobitity for hunting and wandering, which is called "Yu", or to speak briefly, the hunting park. Such a "Yu", besides the excavation of pond for fishery and the throwing up earth to form terraces, gives nothing but natural landscape, including wild birds and animals for hunting, so we call it the "Ancient Primitive Yu".
