A STUDY ON THE GROWTH OF EGGPLANT DURING FRUITING STAGE
【Abstract】 In this paper, the morphological characters and growth correlation of fruiting plants of eggplant variety "Ling-ching Great-giant" were carefully studied.1. It was shown that the fruiting habits and the development of fruits are the most distinct phenotypic morphological characters during fruiting stage, and are closely related to the cultural practices.2. Based upon our observations and experiments it was found that from the appearance of the first flower bud to anthesis, is a transitory stage to that of fruiting. The rate of in-crease in dry matler at this stage is nearly the same like that in the seedling, Kω = 0.0697, It is only the main axis and its leaves keep in growth.3. The time that the "gate flower" comes into blooming is a critical morphological phase for the begining of fruiting stage. After that, lateral shoots which consisted of two primary shoots, four secondary shoots, sight tertiary shoots and 16 fourth shoots were produced sub-sequently. Each kind of these shoots produced a so-called "gate-fruit", 2 "geminate or didymous fruits", 4 "quaternate fruits", 8 "octamerous fruits" and 16 "starring fruits" respec-tively. As a rule, shoots and leaves were usually grown vigorously just before the development of the fruits to be supported. After the ceases in growth of the shoots and leaves, the fruits of the next term began to grow.4. The intensive fruiting period of an eggplant was found between the appearance of the so-called "budding eye" stage of the "gate-fruit", and the "guaternate fruits" at edible maturity.During the intensive fruiting period, growth materials or foods were mainly used for the growth of fruits, and reduced the supply for the growth of new shoots and leaves as well as young fruits. Competition for foods between the vegetative and reproductive growth would be found at or after the appearance of the edible stage of the quaternate fruits. And the growth rate of the whole plant was therefore remarkably reduced.
