【Abstract】 By means of negative staining and ultra-thin sectioning of electron micro- scopy,the morphology and structure of the"virus bundle" of the polyhedral virus(nuclear type)of armyworm, Leucania separata Walker are studied. The"virus bundles"are in a random position and randomly located within the polyhedral proteins.After the dissolution of the polyhedral proteins with weak al- kali,considerable amount of virus bun- dles may be obtained.The virus bundles are infectious to the larvae of armyworms. A single virus bundle is a short rod,mea- suring about 5,000 A×2,500 A with more or less round ends and is composed of 4—8 virus particles forming a bundle surrounded by a membrane.The virus particles within the membrane are irre- gularly packed. The membrane reveals a surface structure of helical pattern which,accord- ing to our preliminary observations, has 14—17 turns.The pitch of the helix is not determined. There is a disc-like structure fitting like a cap at each end of the virus bundle rod.This structure is a structural com- ponent of the virus bundle. Although a"protrusion"is occassion- ally observed at one end of the virus bundle rod but it is not certain whether it is a structural component of the virus bundle. According to our study,the virus bundle of the polyhedral virus(nuclear type)of armyworm,Leucania separata Walker is a distinct structural unit of the polyhedron and the name"virus bundle" is,therefore,suggested.
