THE CHANGE OF THE WHOLE BLOOD SEROTONIN IN DOGS DURING THE ACUTE-RADIATION SICKNESS
【Abstract】 The whole blood serotonin (hydroxytrypamine,5-HT)was determined in experimental dogs suffering from acute illness by radiation with 265 rad. The method of determination was according to Maickel’s, by the formation of fluorescent derivatives with ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPT), but modified by using the blood sample of 0.5 ml instead of 2ml. The serotonin in the clear supernatant was placed on the microglass and examined under fluorescence spectrophotometer, Hitachi MPF-4, made in Japan. The results of the experiments revealed that the normal level of blood serotonin (0.46±0.07y/ml) was inclined to decrease on the 3rd day after radiating exposure, quite obvious on the 10th day and reached the minimium at the 16th day. By the meantime hemorrhage was usually apparent and quite frequent. The tendency of hemorrhage was as a rule kept in parallel with the decreasing of thrombocyte count. The survival dogs gradually had their blood serotonin returned to normal after 4 or more weeks.
