【Abstract】 The death of Comrade Kuo Mo-jo, an outstanding Chinese proletarian cultural fighter, is a great loss to our country, particularly to the country’s science and culture. Comrade Ku Mo-jo was a famous scholar of broad learning and a man of marked talent who made important contributions in various fields of sciences, includung the study of oracle inscriptions. Among his works in the latter field are such well-known titles as the Chia Ku WenTzu Yen Chiu 甲骨文字研究, P’o Tz’u T’ung Ch’uan 卜辞通篡 and the Yin Ch’i Ts’ui Pien殷契粹编. Mention should also be made of his comprehensive studies of ancient Chinese history like the Chung Kuo Ku Tai She Hui Yen Chiu 中国古代社会研究 and the Nu Li Chih Shih Tai 奴隶制时代. In addition, such of his other works as the Ku Tai Ming K’e Hui K’ao 古代铭刻汇考, Ku Tai Ming K’e Hui K’ao Hsu Pien 古代铭刻汇考续编, Ch’ing T’ung Ch’i Shih Tai 青铜器时代, Shih P’i P’an Shu, 十批判书 and Ch’u T’u Wen Wu Erh San Shih 出土文物二三事 also discuss, among others, oracle inscriptions. Comrade Kuo Mo-jo’s contributions to the clarification of such problems as the periodization of ancient Chinese society, the genealogy of the Shang kings, the astronomy and calendarical system of the Shang dynasty and the status of the Shang slaves opened up a new approach to the study of early Chinese society as well as to the study of the Shang history. It was largely under the inspiration of his pioneering work in the study of oracle inscriptions that in the last few decades Chinese. scholars have published numerous articles and monographs on the subject. Indeed to this day his influence can still be discerned in this field in such technical matters as the piecing together of fragmentary texts of oracle inscriptions. It is much deplored that Comrade Kuo Mo-jo who was the editor of the Chia Ku Wen He Chi 甲骨文全集 should have died on the eve of its publication. But his meticulous Scientific approach, his diligence in exploring new problems and his courage in blazing new trails, as well as his honesty and his adherence to truth, have set an everlasting example for all of us to follow.更多还原
