NOTES ON THE CHINESE SPECIES OF GENUS PHLEBOTOMUS. PART Ⅸ SANDFLIES IN SINKIANG URGHUR AUTONOMOUS REGION WITH DESCRIPTION OF PHLEBOTOMUS MINUTUS VAR. SINKIANGENSIS, N. VAR.
【Abstract】 In the years of 1957 and 1958, a total number of 2,590 sandflies were collectedfrom different districts in Sinkiang Urghur Autonomous Region. Four species of sandflyhave been found, namely Phlebotomus chinensis Newstead 1916, Phlebotomus mongolensisSinton 1928, Phlebotomus major Annandale 1910 and Phlebotomus minutus var. sin-kiangensis n. var. Phlebotomus major Ann. 1910 is first recorded in our country and Phlebotomusminutus var. sinkiangensis is found to be a new variety of the sandfly fauna. Themorphology of the former species corresponds with the diagnostic table given by Sinton(1932, 1933). The latter variety belongs to the minutus group of genus Sergentomyiaand its specific morphological characters are as follows: The bodies of adults in bothsexes are small, being approximately 2.2 mm. in length. Numerous recumbant hairspresent on the dorsum of abdominal segments from Ⅱ to Ⅵ. In the male, the buccalcavity possesses a small pigmented area with ragged posterior border. The posterior rowof buccal armature consists of about 10 arrow-shaped teeth; anterior to this row and onthe edge of the arch, there are 16-18 smaller teeth. Several small teeth scatter on bothsides of posterior row. In the female, the buccal cavity possesses a bell-like pigmentedarea with a long curved stalk at the anterior convex center. Its posterior border pro-trudes into the buccal cavity. The buccal armature is well-developed. The posterior rowconsists of 14 large and arrow-shaped teeth, of which the four central teeth are placed much closer than the others. Anterior to this row, 18 triangular teeth are found alongboth lateral edges of the arch.On both sides of the posterior row, there are 5-10 scat-tered small teeth. The spermathecae resemble to those of Phlebotomus koloshanensisYao & Wu, 1946, but no trumpet-like distal segment is observed. These characters aredistinctly different from all other species of the same genus so far recorded in the litera-ture.
