ONE YEAR’S OBSERVATIONS ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND HABITS OF A. SINENSIS AND C. FATIGANS IN FOOCHOW
【Abstract】 Since A. sinensis and C. fatigans are the important, vectors of malaria and filaria disease in Foo-chow and since their biologies had not been fully understood, we made a series of month-to-monthobservations on their development and habits both under laboratory and outdoor conditions. Resultsof these observations are summarized as follows: 1. Average number of eggs laid per batch by A. sinensis is smaller than that laid by C.fatigans, but the monthly difference in egg numbers of the former is bigger than that of the latter, showing that egg laying activity of C. fatigans, is not much effected by temperature. 2. The time of egg laying of both of these two species of mosquitoes is confined to the periodbetween dusk and dawn, but most A. sinensis lay eggs during 8--10 p. m. and most C. fatigansduring 2--5 a. m. 3. Temperature seems to have little influence on egg hatching of these two mosquitoes, thedifference between monthly rates of egg hatching being very small. However, egg batchng rate ofC. fatigans, is slightly higher than that of A. sinensis. 4. Both of these species of mosquitoes seem to choose the same feeding habitats as their day res-ting places. Most of A. sinensis were found to rest in cattle sheds and most of C. fatigans in humanrooms. The biggest number of catches of A. sinensis was in the period between April and June, whereas for C. fatigans it was between May and August. 5. Based on observation made in cattle shed, A. sinensis was found to enter shed throughoutthe whole night, but the time of its greatest activity was confined to the houis of 7--8 p. m. C.fatigans was also found to enter houses in each hour of the night, but in contrast to A, sinensis, its biggest number of catches was obtained during 4--6 a. m. 6. Although these two species of mosquitoes would feed readily on human as well as onanimal blood, A. sinensis prefers cattle to human blood and C. fatigans likes human blood muchmore than cattle blood. 7. A. sinensis and C. fatigans do not show signs of real hibernation in Foochow. Duringwinter months the great majority of them still have undigested blood in the stomach and the ovariesoften develop up from Ⅲ to Ⅴ stages. 8. Larvae of these two species of mosquitoes breed in a large variety of water collections, but the two chief breeding grounds of A. sinensis are clean water pools and rice fields and C,fatigans breeds mostly in sewage ditches, fire-buckets and anti-air raid Shelters.
