【Abstract】 Fleas identified as Peromyscopsylla himalaica(Roths. 1915)were collected from the hilly areasof Teh-hwa, Shao-wu, Chinkiang (Chuan-chow) and Chien-chen, Fukien Province, and fromWen-chow, Chekiang Province in 1956-1957. Comparing these specimens with Rothschild’s andKumada’s descriptions and drawings of P. himalaica collected from India and Japan, we find thatthere exist certain morphological characters which warrant the erection of a new subspecies, andP. h. sinica subsp. nov. is named. We also agree with Kumada’s suggestion that the Indian and Japanese specimens might beconsidered as two different subspecies representing different geographical variations. P. h. sinica subsp. nov. differs from the subsp. of Kumada in the following structures: thatthe shape at the fusion of the manubrium with the tergal apodeme of ninth segment in the maleis an arch as in the majority of fleas, and there is no "ventral sinus" as exists in Kumada’ssubsp. that the apex of the movable finger of the male clasper is of equal width or slightlynarrower than its base, not tapering as in the Japanese subspecies; and that the apex of the seventhsternite of the female, with its sinus deeper and its upper and lower lobes longer than those ofthe subsp. of Kumada. P. h. sinica subsp. nov. is morphologically more close to P. h. himalaica, the typical subsp.from India, and differs by having its finger longer than the process of clasper in most instances, instead of being of equal length. There are 4--5 stout bristles at the bend of the posterior armof the ninth sternite instead of a row of thin bristles. The shape of the apex of the lower lobeof the seventh sternite is truncate instead of being cone-shaped. The head of the spermatheca isevenly elliptical instead of being widest near the apex as in P. h. himalaica. We believe that if more specimens are collected from these localities and studied in detail, especially on the structures of their phallosome the differences between these subspecies would bemore definite. P. h. sinica subsp. nov. appears more frequently from August to December. Present recordsshow that it is a flea of murid rodents and six host species have been listed, i. e. Rattus loseasubsp., R. fulvescens huang, R. confucianus confucianus,R.andersoni, R. edwardsi edwardsi andEothenomys melanogaster.
