PHLEBOTOMUS FROM KWANGTUNG PROVINCE,WITH DESCRIPTION OF A NEW VARIETY
【Abstract】 For the first time sandflies are discovered on the mainland of KwangtungProvince. They belong to four different species. Their names and the localitiesfrom which they were collected are given as follows: 1. Phlebotomus squamipleuris Newstead, 1912, from the town of Sai-nan, Sam-shuihsien. 2. Ph. hoepplii Tang & Maa, 1945, from the center of Kwangchow city. 3. Ph. kiangsuensis Yao & Wu, 1938, from Ma-pa Village, Kukonghsien. 4. Ph. barraudi var. siulamensis var. nov., from the towns of Suilam, Chung-sanhsien, and Sai-nan,Samshuihsien. The new variety is described as follows: Phlebotomus barraudi var. siulamensis n. var. (Figs. 1-9). Both males and females are gray in color. Their dorsum provided with re-cumbent abdominal hairs from second to sixth segments. The new variety re-sembles closely Ph. barraudi Sinton, 1929 and Ph. barraudi var. kwangsiensis Yaoand Wu, 1941, but can be distinguished from them mainly by the buccal andpharyngeal armatures. Male The total length of the body is 1.710mm., about 0.80 times that of the hindleg and 1.22 times that of the wing. The pharynx is 4 times as long as broad. The pharyngeal armature consistsof numerous short ridges on the posterior end of the pharynx. Each ridgepossesses minute serrated edges. The buccal cavity, not provided with any pigmented area, is armed withdouble rows of teeth, 25-30 in number in the outer row.Four chitinous spots, two in a group, may be seen cephalic to the buccal armature. The antenna has a formula of 1 over iii-xv, 1.137mm. long, about 6.5 timesthe length of segment iii, and 4 times the combined length of segments xii-xvi. Segment iii 0.91 times of iv plus v. Segments xii-xvi 1.56 times of iii. The palp has a formula of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The Newstead spines are situatedat the basal third of segment 3 and are about 7 in number. Relative lengths 2.3,4.6, 7.5, 10, 20.3. The wing is about 4.2 times as long as broad. Details of other features maybe seen in table 2. The hind leg is 3.8 times as long as its femur , 3 times as long as its tibia, and 6.2 times as long as its first tarsal segment. The male genitalia are of the minutus type. The distal segment of thesaperior clasper carries four curved spines, 3 apical and 1 on sub-apical tubercle. The proximal segment is 2.25 times the distal, about 1.25 times that of the in-termediate appendage and 1.20 times the inferior clasper. The intromittent organis 0.78 times as long as the inferior clasper. The submedian lamellae are 0.68times of inferior clasper. Intromittent organ provided with bifid end. The pom-petta are slender and highly chitinized. Female The total length of the body is 1.822 mm. and 0.76 times that of the hind legand 1.23 times of the wing. The pharynx is 4.46 times as long as broad, flask-shaped. It gradually de-creases its size towards the anterior end, has a slight constriction on the posteriortwo-fifths. Just caudad to the constriction, two longitudinal protuberances fromthe wall of the pharynx were found. On these protuberances, as far as can bemade out, are some very minute spines, and cephalic to the protuberances onthe wall of the pharynx, some coarser spines may be found. The pharyngealarmature consists of numerous long teeth (or hooks). Each tooth possesses a fork-ed end, forming a Y-shape. The buccal cavity has a toadstool-like pigmented area with a long stalk verydeep in bifurcation. The buccal armature consists of a slightly curve row of veryminute teeth, approximately 70 in number, each measuring 0.013mm. long. Arow of 15 chitinous spots cephalic to the armature, but without small vacuole-like rings as seen in Ph. barraudi var. kwangsiensis. The antenna has a formula of 2 over iii-xv,6.28 times its segment iii, and4.22 times of combined length of xii-xvi. Segment iii equals combined length ofiv plus v Segments xii-xvi 1.49 times of iii. The palp has a formula of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Segments 1 plus 2 equal 3. The to-tal length of the palp is 0.55 times that of the antenna. Newstead spines aresituated at the basal third of segment 3 and are about 25 in number. Relative lengths 2.5, 4.7, 7.2, 10,
