【Abstract】 The flattened Eucleid Thosea sinensis Wk. is one of the most common insectsin Kiangsi. It causes a considerable damage to many fruit and forest trees such asAleurites eaudata Muell., Prunus salicina Lindl., Sapum sebiferum Roxb., Citrusnobilis Lour., Camptotheca acuminata Dec., etc. There are two generations per year. The overwintering larvae pupate in themiddle of April, and the adults emerge in May. The first generation appears fromMay to July, while the second lasts from July to September. Occasionally, a thirdgeneration is produced, and the larvae make their cocoons in October. The full-fed larvae creep down the trees and make their cocoons in the soil.They usually creep down during the time from 8 P.M. to 6 A.M. the next morning,the most descending between 2-4 A.M. The number of cocoons in the soil correspondto the soil texture arround the trunk: in naked, firm and heavy clay, no cocoon couldbe found; in soil with much humus and debris most cocoons are found; in the sandy-loam, the number of the cocoons is less. The distance from the trunk and the depthof cocoon in the soil also correspond to the soil texture: In firm and heavy clay, thecocoons are mostly scattered, shallowly and near to the trunk, In debris, humus andsandy-loam, they are deeper and more concentrated. Control method: The younger larvae may be killed by spraying fine soil dustin the early morning as the dew has not yet dried, and the more effective way is tospray D.D.T. and 666 throughout the whole larvae period. Such method as bindingstraw around the trunk and loosening the soil arround the root for alluring cocoonmaking has no value for common use.更多还原
