【Abstract】 The steppe caterpillars are an important pest in the highland pastures of northwest China. They infest forage grasses belonging to Cyperaceae and Gramineae, and affect greatly their normal growth, thus causing a dearth of forage in those regions.After identification the caterpillars are found to belong to four new species.1.Gynaephora qinghaientit Chou 0t Ying, sp. nov.Very similar to G. alpherakii Gr.-Gr., but the clasper of the male is very short, with a length not greater than its height, and with the end obtuse and projecting dorsad. The wings have a brownish background and are somewhat variegated. The outer line and one of the terminal spots in the median cell are yellowish white, wing expanse ca 25 mm.The holotype, allotype and paratypes are collected from Yushu and Tseku, Qinghai, and from Anduo, Tibet.2.Gynaephora aureata Chou et Ying, sp. nov.Very similar to the previous species, but the wings have a dark black background with golden lines and spotsj the lower end of the outer line is near to the anal angle; there is a spot each on the inner and outer sides of the terminal vein of the median cell. The dorsal margin of the clasper is evidently longer than the ventral. The aedeagus is larger and less crooked. Wing expanse ca 22mm.The holotype and paratypes are collected from Zeku and Henan, Qinghai.3.Gynaephora ruoergentit Chou et Ying, sp. nov.Very similar to the second species, but the wings have a gray background. The length of the clasper is almost as great as its height with the tip projecting in a triangle. The aedeagus is not crooked. Wing expanse ca 27 mm.The holotype and paratypes are collected from Ruoerge, Sichuan.4.Gynaephora minora Chou et ying, sp. nov.Very similar to the third species, but smaller in size. The forewing has a silvery gray background with the outer line strongly arcuate and extending to the middle of the hind margin. The clasper is squarely rotund with the tip not projecting. The aedeagus is crooked. Wing expanse 17 mm.The holotype and paratypes are collected from Ruoerge, Sichuan.更多还原
