华南新发现的巨猿牙齿化石
NEW MATERIALS OF GIGANTOPITHECUS TEETH FROM SOUTH CHINA
【Abstract】 In a recent excavation, scientists of the Laboratory of Vertebrate Palaeontologyobtained 3 fossil teeth undoubtedly of Gigantopithecus from a cave in Tahsin Dis-trict,Kwangsi Province. Also collected are a large quantity of mammalian fossilsincluding large orang-utan,giant panda,Stegodon, tapir, etc.which are characteris-tic for the middle Pleistocene fauna of South China caves. Thus it solves the longsuspended problems on the locality and the geologic age of this giant.Besides,47 teeth also of Gigantopithecus were acquired in the People’s SupplyCooperation of Kwangsi and Kwangtung Provinces.A preliminary study of these teeth are given here.Gigantopithecus equipped with a tusk-like lower canine and a moderatelysectorial type of the first lower premolar. The lower third molar is very long andits trigonid breadth considerably exceeds the talonid one. These features suggestthat Gigantopithecus is a kind of anthropoid of enormous size.On the other hand, the upper canine, though retaining its anthropoid character, approaches that of man than all the other anthropoids. The absence or small-ness of diastema and the broad-based blunt cusps and the wrinkle systems of boththe upper and lower molars are closer to hominids. The size of the teeth of Gigantopithecus far exceeds that of any living orfossil hominid and anthropoid. The morphological pattern of Gigantopithecus indicates that it may belong toa side branch of the anthropoids, but the point where it took off is nearer tothe hominid line than any other fossil anthropoids so far found.
