【Abstract】 This paper represents a comprehensive review of the ancient Chinese literature of agricul- tural science with special reference to the eommon feeds widely used by the aneient Chinese people for raising livestocks. These feeds have been classified according to the principles of modern science of animal feeding into 15 groups, namely, 1/ green forages, 2/ hay, 3/ grass meal or leaf meal, 4/ dricd green leaves of forest, 5/ water plants, 6/ fermented green fo- rages, 7/ straws and chaffs, 8/ brans, 9/ grains, 10/ sprouting feeds, 11/ oil cakes, 12/ roots, 13/ mineral supplements, 14/ feeds of animal origin, 15/ miscelleneous, including brewing grains, silkworm feacesetc. Some groups of feeds were used for feeding all kinds of livestocks. These were represented by green forages, grains and mineral supplements. Others were used only for one or more than one groups of livestocks. The significance of such kind of feeding practice by the anicient Chinese people and the nutritional value of the various groups of feeds are discussed in the light of modern scinece of animal nutrition.更多还原
