【Abstract】 While the capital of the Yuan Dynasty (1271?368 A. D.) was established at Ta-tu (now Peking), the most developed and flourishing economic area of the Empire was in the South. The annual collection of food (grain tribute) as land tax from the people was 12,114,708 piculs, of which more than, one third (4,494,783 piculs) came from the provinces of Kiangsu and Chekiaiig.
